Metamorphosis at Teatro Variedades – A Mural Celebrating Parque Mayer’s Reopening
To mark the reopening of the iconic Teatro Variedades at Parque Mayer in Lisbon, I had the honor of collaborating with artist LS to create a mural exploring the duality between reality and fiction. Curated by the Galeria de Arte Urbana, this work was commissioned by the City of Lisbon as part of the requalification of this historic cultural space.
Given that this project come within a context of change at Teatro Variedades, the objective was to show it’s relationship with the spectator. We thought of giving it the title "Metamorphosis" because we understand that the very nature of theatre involves transformation and change (characters and settings) as well as the manipulation of narratives. This duality between fantasy and reality invites the spectator to reflect on the complexities of life and identity, which is the basis for our work.
The mural, titled “Metamorphosis,” highlights the ongoing transformation that occurs in theater with every performance. The essence of theater lies in its fluid movement between the real and the imaginary, whether through characters who become someone else on stage or sets that transport the audience to different worlds. This interplay between reality and fiction was the central inspiration for our work.
The mural composition features two faces, each symbolizing a part of this theatrical universe. The question posed to the audience is: which face represents reality, and which represents fiction? The interpretation is left open, allowing each spectator to draw their own conclusion.
